# Create a card from an email in Gmail

> Use the ZARMS add-on to turn the email open in Gmail into a card. What ends up in the card, what you can do afterwards, and what to do if it doesn't work.

Open an email in Gmail, pick a board in ZARMS in the side panel on the right, and press **Create card**. The email becomes a card: the subject is the card name and the body becomes the card's Google document.

[Install the add-on](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/workspace-addon/install.md) first.

## Create a card

**1. Open an email**

In Gmail, open the email you want to turn into a card.

**2. Open ZARMS in the side panel**

Press the ZARMS icon in the side panel on the right.

**3. Choose a board**

Under **Board**, choose where to create the card. You can choose My board too. If you belong to
several teams, boards are listed as "team name / board name".

**4. Create the card**

Press **Create card**. "Card created." appears, and the new card's details show in the side
panel.

## What ends up in the card

| Email part | Card |
| - | - |
| Subject | Card name ("(No subject)" if empty) |
| Body | The card's document, starting with the sender and an **Open the original email** link |
| Attachments | Not imported. Put anything you need in the card's folder |

Assignees, due dates and status follow the **card create defaults** of the board and team. Adjust them in ZARMS afterwards.

The document is created through ZARMS's own Google connection. If it can't be created, for example because the connection has lapsed or the board has no Google Drive folder, "The body document couldn't be created, so the body is in the card's description." appears and the body goes into the card description.

## What you can do afterwards

The new card stays in the side panel. You can change its status, follow it, and open its document or folder. It works the same way as in [See a card and change its status from Google Docs](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/workspace-addon/docs.md#what-you-can-do-in-the-side-panel).

![The details of the card created from the email, shown in the Gmail side panel](https://mintcdn.com/xgeneinc/N4TaKb3b86sRVhrq/images/workspace-addon/gmail-created-en.png?fit=max\&auto=format\&n=N4TaKb3b86sRVhrq\&q=85\&s=234d8665d9d021d09975a576654a8990)

## When ZARMS reads the email

ZARMS reads only the one open email, and only when you press **Create card**. Opening an email doesn't make ZARMS read it. ZARMS doesn't read other emails or your inbox list.

## To turn emails into cards automatically

If every incoming email should become a card, for example for a support inbox, forward it to a board's inbound address instead. See [Create cards by email](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/boards/email-to-card.md).

## If something goes wrong

| Message | What to do |
| - | - |
| "Open an email to create a card from it." | You're looking at the email list. Open the email you want to turn into a card |
| "There are no boards you can add cards to. Check your boards in ZARMS." | You don't belong to a team, or your team is suspended or canceled. Check the team in ZARMS |
| "Couldn't create the card. Try again, or check in ZARMS." | Press it again. If it keeps failing, check in ZARMS that you can create cards on that board and that your plan's limit isn't reached ([Plans](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/billing/plans.md)) |
| "Use a Google account that has signed in to ZARMS before." | See [Install the add-on](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/workspace-addon/install.md#if-something-goes-wrong) |
