# Break work down into steps

> Write the smaller tasks inside a card on the Steps tab of the card details. How to add, reorder, and delete steps, and how to see progress.

When you want to list steps or small tasks inside one card, use steps. Write them on the **Steps** tab in the middle of the card details. Steps used to be called "checklist."

If a task needs its own assignees or dates, make it a separate card instead of a step, and [link the cards as parent and child](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/cards/organize.md#group-cards-as-parent-and-child).

## Add and edit steps

* **Add**: Type in the "Enter a step..." row at the bottom. Press Enter on a row to add a new row below it.
* **Check off a finished step**: Press the checkbox to the left of the step.
* **Reorder**: Drag the handle to the left of the step.
* **Delete**: Press the trash icon to the right of the step. You can also delete an empty row by pressing Backspace or Delete.
* **Undo**: Press Ctrl+Z (⌘+Z on a Mac) to undo, and Ctrl+Y or Ctrl+Shift+Z to redo.

Like other fields, step changes are saved when you press **Save changes**. The changes are also recorded in the comments.

## See progress

The **Steps** tab heading shows `done/total`. The same appears on Kanban cards and in the **Steps** column of the List view. Hover over it to see the steps.

To see only cards with work still left, turn on **Only cards with unfinished steps** under **Filter** ([Filter and bulk edit](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/boards/filter-and-bulk-edit.md)).

## Use the same steps every time

For work that follows the same steps, turn a card with steps into a **template card**. The steps are then copied every time you create a new card from it. For details, see [Create a card](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/cards/create.md#create-from-a-template).

You can also ask AI something like "Add the review steps to this card" ([Ask AI and have it take actions](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/ai/ask.md)).
