# Let people know with comments

> How to notify assignees by commenting on a card, how to choose who to mention, how to comment on boards and members, and how to use the team-wide comment list.

Keep the conversation about a card in its comments. When you post a comment, the people you mention get an email and a browser notification. Because the whole history stays on the card, people who join later can follow what happened.

## Comment on a card

**1. Open the card details**

Press a card to open its details. The **Comments** tab on the right lists the comments so far,
oldest first.

**2. Choose who to notify**

Use **@** at the bottom of the screen to choose who to notify. **All assignees** is selected at
first.

**3. Write and save**

Type your comment and press **Save changes**. Below the save button, you can see who will be
notified.

### Choosing who to notify

| Mention | Who gets notified |
| - | - |
| All assignees | The Creator, Processor, Reviewer, and Receiver |
| Creator / Processor / Reviewer / Receiver | Only the people in the roles you choose |
| (blank) | No one is mentioned |

The names of the people you mention appear in the comment as "@name." The card's followers get every comment, whoever it's addressed to, but their names are not shown.

No matter who you mention, the Processor, Reviewer, and Receiver are notified about comments on cards they're assigned to (unless they've turned this off in their notification settings). You aren't notified about your own comments. For when notifications are sent, see [Notification settings](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/notifications/settings.md).

### Field changes are recorded too

When you change the status, dates, or steps, a description of the change (for example, "Updated priority from Medium to High") is added to the comment box automatically. Save it as is to keep a record of the change. You can freely add to it or rewrite it.

If you make a change somewhere other than the card details, such as moving a card to another column in Kanban, a record of the change is posted as a comment automatically. In that case, no one is mentioned.

> [!NOTE]
>
> You can't edit or delete a comment after posting it. Check it before you send. If a comment is no
> longer needed, you can tidy it away with Archive, described next.

### Tidy up comments

You can tidy away comments you wrote with the comment's **Archive** button. Archived comments are gathered under **Archived** above the thread, and you can bring them back with **Unarchive**.

## Comment on boards and members

* **Boards**: On a board's screen, open **Comment** in the right navigation, and a comment box appears at the bottom. Use it for messages about the whole board. You can't mention anyone in a board comment.
* **Members**: There is a comment box on the right side of a member's details. Choose **This member** as the mention to notify that person. You can't comment on people who haven't signed in yet.
* **Groups and skills**: Group and skill details also have a comment box.

## Use the comment list so you don't miss anything

Press **Comment** in the right navigation to open the list of comments across your whole team. If you have unread comments addressed to you, the button shows how many.

* Switch between **All**, **Mentions**, and **My posts**.
* Turn on **Unread** to see only comments you haven't read yet.
* Press the card or board name under a comment to open that card or board.
* When you close the list, comments addressed to you are marked as read.

If you open it from a board's screen, it shows only comments on that board and its cards.

## If something goes wrong

* **The other person didn't get an email**: They may not be mentioned or assigned, or they may have turned off the notification in their settings. People who are only in the directory and haven't signed in don't get notifications. Also see [Emails don't arrive](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/troubleshooting/email-not-arriving.md).
* **A Guest can't see comments**: Guests can see only comments on the boards they were invited to.
* **You can't comment on an archived card**: Archived cards are read-only. Unarchive the card first, then write your comment.
