# Create a board

> Create a board for each body of work and put cards on it. How to create one, the naming rules, and how to read the board list.

A board is where you keep related cards together. Create one for any unit whose progress you want to see at a glance, such as a department, a project, or recurring work. Cards that don't belong on any board can go on [My Board](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/boards/my-board.md).

Who can do this: Owner, Manager, Member (Guests can't create boards)

## Create a board

**1. Open the create dialog**

At the top of the screen, click the arrow to the right of **New** and choose **Board**. You can
also press Alt+B. When the board list is open, just click **New**.

**2. Enter a name**

On the **Quick create** tab, enter a **Board name**. The **Description** is optional.

**3. Create it**

Click **Create**. Your new board opens. Next, go on to [Create a card](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/cards/create.md).

Each board name must be unique in the team. If the name is already taken, you'll see "This board name is already in use." Names can be up to 200 characters.

When you create a board, ZARMS creates a folder for it on the shared drive in Google Drive. Card files are kept in that folder. For how the folders are laid out, see [Google Drive structure and permissions](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/admin/google-drive.md).

To create many boards at once, use the **Bulk import** tab to create them from a Google Sheets spreadsheet. The steps are in [Import and export with spreadsheets](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/boards/spreadsheets.md).

## How many boards you can create

The Basic and Starter plans limit how many boards you can create. Archived boards don't count. When you reach the limit, [archive](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/boards/duplicate-and-archive.md) boards you no longer use, or change your plan. The limits are listed in [Plans and trial](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/billing/plans.md).

## The board list

Click **Board** in the left nav to open the board list. In the list view, each board shows its card count by status, the number of overdue cards, its assignees, and when it was last updated. Switch to **Grid** in the right nav to show the boards as large tiles.

From the menu at the left end of each row, you can open the board, [change its settings](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/boards/settings.md), [duplicate or archive it](https://help.zarms.cloud/en/boards/duplicate-and-archive.md), or open its Google Drive folder.

Use **Filter** to choose whether archived boards are included, and to narrow the boards by the members or groups that take part in them.

## Troubleshooting

* **You can't click the button to create a board**: If the team's board count or member count is over the plan limit, every create action stops, not just boards. You can still view, edit, and comment on existing cards. To create again, archive a board, remove a member, or upgrade your plan.
* **You can't create a board as a Guest**: Guests can't create boards. Ask an Owner or Manager.
